How we train

You may be a beginner, but your body is a problem-solving expert.

It is built to notice what is happening, try a solution, and adjust. Foundations gives it useful problems to solve—at a level where you can work safely, pay attention, and improve.

Problem-based learning

We set the problem.
You explore the solution.

Rather than asking you to memorize a long sequence before you can train, a coach gives you a clear task, a goal, and a few boundaries. Then you work with a real partner and learn through the interaction.

The coach changes the problem as you improve. The challenge grows with you. Useful movements and techniques begin to make sense because you discover when and why you need them.

01

Live from the start

You work with a partner immediately, but the task is scaled so a beginner can participate safely.

02

Clumsy is normal

New movement will feel awkward. That is not failure—it is your body adapting and learning.

03

Don’t sweat the technique

Technique and skill are different things. At Primal, we prioritize skill: solving the problem with the person in front of you. You don’t need to be technical before you can be skillful.

Your first practice

What it will feel like.

  1. A simple goalThe coach explains what you are trying to accomplish—not a script to reproduce.
  2. A live problemYou explore it with a partner at an appropriate pace and level of contact.
  3. Short roundsYou reset, change roles, and get more chances to notice what works.
  4. Coaching adjustmentsThe coach changes the task or offers a useful cue when you need it.
No head contact in Foundations.

We learn the sport by doing it. Getting hit in the head isn’t necessary to learn the early game, so novices, minors, and hobbyists train without head contact. That lets us work on real problems while avoiding unnecessary head impacts.

Why we train this way → Knees & Noggins
Knees & Noggins

Train for the long haul.

Beginners learn to fall, manage balance, and protect their partners before grappling gets more complex. In Foundations, we keep live practice while removing head contact. No head contact for children, anyone under 18, or novice adults. Hard sparring is not tolerated at Primal.

Come with clean gear and trimmed nails, remove jewelry, follow your coach’s instructions, and look after your training partners. You do not need to prove anything on your first day.
